Some facts about the Portuguese language:
— Portuguese is a pluricentric language, i.e. it is spoken in several major geographic areas (Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Macao, etc.), which are bound up by the linguistic notion of lusophony — the word is derived from the name of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania, which covered most of modern-day Portugal (by analogy with the notion of francophony — all the French speaking regions).
— The grammar structure is similar to that of its closest relative — Spanish. All in all, the Portuguese language is more archaic than Spanish.
— In 2008, Portugal brought forward a reform whereby the Portuguese and Brazilian orthographies would co-exist alongside each other.
— It was thanks to Portuguese that many exotic derivations from Eastern languages made their way into Europe.
